What is so bad about diet soda?

Artificial sweeteners are worth avoiding, but not for the reasons you might think. First we had saccharine (sweet and low), it is a known carcinogen. Then came aspartame (nutrasweet). It is known to be toxic to brain cells. These are important to many of us.

Newest is sucralose (splenda). Most soda manufacturers have switched to it.

Many voiced concerns that the sweet taste alone altered blood sugar. After reading the studies, I was not convinced this was a big factor. Some studies showed it did happen to a tiny degree, some showed it did not happen at all.

Splenda is also unique in that it is not absorbed. This means you taste it, swallow it and then poop it. It does not get into your blood stream and go through your brain, liver, kidneys – nothing.

Now we have data saying it is harmful but for entirely different reasons. It turns out splenda kills your protective bacteria like antibiotics do. Among many other bad effects, the loss of some strains of good bacteria can actually make you fat!

Do avoid artificial sweeteners. Two natural sweeteners that are OK to use and even beneficial include Xylitol and Stevia.
