When the flu bug bites, what can you do?

How to make your Pantry an Arsenal of Antibiotics and Antivirals (natural of course)

People - Sick:Flu

We all know that An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure, but when the flu bug bites… what can you do?

First things first… let’s cover the 1,2,3 basics for protecting ourselves against colds and flus this season.

  1. Dietary Do’s and Don’ts

DON’T – Consume grains, starchy foods or sugars to allow for immune system to function optimally

*Fun Fact – 1 teaspoon of sugar is known to knock out your immune system for up to 4 hours and 12 teaspoons (the amount found in most sodas or sugary drinks) will inhibit White Blood Cell function entirely for 4 hours.

DO – Hydrate

Water not only helps to hydrate tissues and flush out any toxins, it also helps in the production of lymph. Lymph circulates white blood cells and other needed nutrients to the cells and tissues of the body enabling you to combat infection.

  1. Sleep

A lack of sleep impairs many processes in the body, including the immune system so to prevent illness, keep up on getting those ZZZZs.  Not just any sleep will do – research has shown that restorative sleep (at least 7.5 hours per night) is needed to maintain healthy immune function.

  1. Regular exercise

A simple 20-30 minutes of light to moderate activity per day can boost the body’s defenses against infection. Regular activity encourages circulation of immune cells so that they are able to detect infections quickly. Outdoor activity will also provide the added boost of Vitamin D, a powerful immune boosting nutrient.

*Tip Avoid high intensity activity to prevent burn out. Every individual differs but intense training can actually decrease the amount of white blood cells produced making you more susceptible to illness.

If the flu bug does bite you… here are some items to include in your pantry to help you fight off illness naturally

Honey – defined as a “demulcent” by the World Health Organization, honey relieves irritation and forms protective coat around tissue it comes into contact with. Raw Honey contains thousands of active and live enzymes, minerals, amino acids and nutrients to help provide you with antiviral, antibiotic, and antioxidant properties.

Garlic – the Powerhouse Immune Super Food to combat almost any illness. Studies have shown that Garlic is the most potent antimicrobial serving as a natural antibacterial, antibiotic, antiviral and antifungal.

Ginger– very antiviral and also contains powerful anti-inflammatory properties to help ward of infections and illness.

Lemon – also a natural antibacterial and antiviral to boost your immune system, Lemon encourages optimal digestive health and supports Liver function for good detoxification.  Lemon also promotes health by alkalinizing the body creating a healthy environment to prevent disease.

Cayenne – a Vasodilator meaning that it opens up your blood vessels to allow for adequate circulation. This can serve to clear congested sinuses and help alleviate the symptoms of colds and flu.

*TIP: Purchase all products mentioned above Organic to help avoid any toxins that may compromise immune function
